European Union Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted figures that were central to campaigns to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
