The fast bowler Set to Play a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

Pat Cummins has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chief selector George Bailey has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on 21 November in the WACA.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of taking part.

"We know that time is getting short and multiple considerations around that, not only the physical problem, but further aspects," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he's going to play a significant role. Hopefully starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Injury History

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with recurrences in multiple past seasons leading to absences from three Australian summers in four years.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to make the squad for the Ashes.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and stated that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the opening match as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches in any case. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for another day, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
