Around fifty vehicles have been smeared with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Cars, exterior walls and postboxes were marked, sometimes with swastikas, they announced in a statement.
Officers report they were contacted during the night on Wednesday evening, when a resident observed that a automobile in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored fluid.
The substance had been applied in the shape of a banned symbol, they added.
Police then discovered multiple other smeared cars and residential walls in the surrounding area.
Swastikas are illegal in Germany under regulations banning the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials say early analysis show the substance was probably human blood.
"There is still no indication as to where it came from; authorities are currently not informed of any physical harm in association with the incident," they stated.
Municipal representatives announced they were working "to unravel the incident" and have appealed to the community for details.
A high-ranking representative stated the incident rendered him stunned and needed to be solved promptly.
"This event hits the center of Hanau and revives the pain of the far-right terrorist attack in 2020," he wrote on social media, mentioning the death of nine people by a gunman targeting residents of immigrant origin in 2020.
